The Gravity Well requires no electricity, motors, or agitation – it is 100% passive. By maintaining a very thin layer, only a small part of the explant is exposed to the stress of liquid cultures. This allows for fast nutrient uptake and diffusion, without submerging tissues. The thin layer allows for efficient oxygen diffusion into the media, preventing oxidative stress and suffocation of plant tissues.
The Gravity Well
for passive thin-film liquid culture
Self-filling liquid culture system with no moving parts
How it works
Start by adding the Gravity Well and 115 mL of liquid media to the vessel. Autoclave and let cool.
To help the thin layer spread across the bottom of the vessel, place a strip of paper towel, printer paper, or filter paper along the bottom.
Then, tip the vessel back, so the liquid fills the gravity well. When you place the vessel back on a bench, the Gravity Well will passively maintain a 1mm layer of media on the bottom of the vessel.
The liquid layer will stay at approximately 1mm for the entire duration of the culture. Your plants will outgrow the vessel before all the media is consumed.
This module can be combined with the Root Stand to further support the plants inside the vessel, but is not necessary.
